What’s a school without a loo?

Adding facilities that we all take for granted at schools in Malawi is ensuring children, particularly girls, are not missing school for the simple lack of a toilet.

Absenteeism for girls across Nsanje and Chikwawa in the southern region of Malawi was unacceptably high because girls felt unable to attend school due to a lack of sanitary facilities. Attending a school with no toilets whilst menstruating was simply not an option for many girls.

GOAL has been constructing toilets for schools in Malawi and has witnessed a dramatic drop in absenteeism among female students. GOAL has also introduced sanitation clubs and mothers groups in the community to encourage the girls to stay in school at all times.

Through its water, sanitation and hygiene project in Malawi, GOAL has reached 36 primary schools reaching almost 30,000 pupils.
