Srabonti (14) and her three siblings come from a very poor family. From an early age, she loved sports. Unlike other conservative parents in their community in Kolkata, Srabonti’s mother and father always encouraged her to play rugby and netball. Srabonti’s skill and determination eventually led to her playing netball at national level, when her team came fourth at the First National Netball Championship, held in Delhi in 2014. At the same time, through GOAL India’s intervention, Srabonti continued her school studies.
Srabonti’s ambition to become a distinguished player never left her. She was trained and took part in many matches held across her state. Thanks to her education and her determination, Srabonti has become a youth leader, training other underprivileged children in Kolkata. A famous rugby club has selected Srabonti to work as their sports coach. The club will be paying her a monthly stipend, with which she can help support her family.
