GOAL Sierra Leone has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable development and civic engagement in Sierra Leone.

The agreement, signed on July 25th, paves the way for deeper collaboration between the two entities in key areas including technical support and resource mobilization, joint health advocacy, peer-to-peer community dialogues, civic education promotion, and digital innovation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, GOAL Sierra Leone’s Country Director, James Riak, underscored the central role of information in development and how it served as a catalyst for the partnership. “This MoU symbolizes our unwavering commitment to the people of Sierra Leone. We are ready to support the government not only through programme delivery but also by strengthening systems that promote resilience and long-term impact,” he said.

Riak highlighted the success of GOAL’s Rural WASH Programme, supported by Charity: Water, which has achieved full water coverage in Moyamba and Kenema districts. “The fact that access to clean water was not raised during the recent town hall meetings as a challenge in these areas is a strong testament to the impact of our work,” he added.

The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor Bah, praised GOAL Sierra Leone for being a consistent and reliable partner. “We appreciate GOAL’s enduring presence and commitment throughout some of our nation’s most difficult times,” he said. “We look forward to exploring innovative ideas together, and continuing to build a partnership rooted in shared purpose and mutual respect.” He noted that the Ministry would actively help amplify GOAL’s work and its successes across the country.

GOAL has been operational in Sierra Leone since 1999, initially responding to the civil war’s aftermath and later playing a vital role in the 2014 Ebola outbreak response. Today, GOAL employs over 140 staff and operates in nine of Sierra Leone’s 16 districts, delivering impactful programmes in Health, Food and Nutrition Security, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). In 2024 alone, over 700,000 people benefitted from GOAL’s interventions.
