As famine is officially declared in Gaza City by the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), which has raised its alert to Phase 5 – Catastrophe, GOAL and its long-standing partner, Taawon, are launching a critical new emergency food initiative.
Commencing on 1st Sept 2025, GOAL and Taawon will distribute urgently needed food parcels to 550 displaced families (approximately 3,025 individuals) living in makeshift camps across central and southern Gaza. This intervention aims to combat some of the severe acute hunger, malnutrition, and economic despair among families who have lost everything under relentless bombardment.
This marks the fifth round of GOAL-funded programming in Gaza since late 2023, underscoring the aid agency’s sustained commitment to the region.
Since late 2023, GOAL in partnership with Taawon have:
- Delivered 5,006 fresh food parcels to 1,837 displaced households (10,104 people) between December 2023 and February 2024.
- Operated two primary health care clinics in Gaza since September 2024, providing over 30,000 health consultations, including urgent care, chronic illness treatment, reproductive health services, and referrals, despite extreme access and security challenges.
- Expanded programming to the West Bank in July 2025, launching a social development initiative in Jenin and Tulkarem to support 200 marginalised adolescents with 90 hours of life skills, social capacity building, and vocational training.
Speaking about the GOAL – Taawon partnership, Dr. Tareq Emtairah, Director General, Taawon said,
“The suffering in Gaza is staggering. Since October 2023, our partnership with GOAL has allowed Taawon to respond swiftly, bringing food, healthcare, and dignity to families who have lost everything. In the face of unimaginable conditions, our teams on the ground continue to serve with courage and resilience. This partnership is rooted in shared purpose and a strong commitment to humanity.”
GOAL has worked across the Middle East, including Syria and southern Türkiye, since 2012. This latest emergency food response in Gaza reflects GOAL’s response to meeting urgent needs in one of the world’s most volatile regions, while continuing to advocate for sustained international support.
GOAL continues to join the global call to:
- Open all land crossings into Gaza to allow the full, unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid under a principled UN-led mechanism
- End the siege
- Deliver a permanent ceasefire
