GOAL is recruiting a Business Development Manager to support key strategic business projects across the organisation with a focus on Africa.   

Overview of Role

Reporting to the Director of Funding and Business Development, the Business Development Coordinator will take on a key role in supporting the implementation of the organisational Funding and Financing Strategy and the departmental priority projects to deliver on this.  The role will have a focus on Africa, and will prioritise new business development activities, particularly focused on proposal development, positioning for funding and strategic new business projects. The ideal candidate will have experience of working with multiple donors on developing large bids including working with consortia, and have experience of donor relationship management. Current priority countries include Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Niger, Chad and wider Sahel region, although the role will also have a remit to support the Africa programmes more broadly.

GOAL is looking for a determined, passionate individual who can deliver on the development of key high value funding applications whilst also leading or supporting strategic priority business development projects as required.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Support Strategic Funding & Business Development Projects

  • Work with country offices teams and key business development staff to deliver on funding applications, building consortia, resource mobilisation strategies and fostering a culture of business development.
  • Support and be involved in donor relationship management at country and regional level
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation of GOAL’s business development systems through helping develop better tools, systems, techniques and strategies for identifying, tracking, and pursuing new opportunities and managing institutional knowledge.
  • Identify, track and analyse international development funding trends, donor strategies and funding opportunities to inform team priorities and actions.
  • Oversee the development of GOAL funding pipeline in the Africa region.

Proposal Development

  • Lead, support and review the development of strategic or high value funding proposals, including consortia programmes. This may at times involve taking on a proposal writer role, or a reviewer role ranging from contributing to the drafting, editing and revising of high-quality narrative as required.
  • Ensure that multi-country, high value bids are effectively resourced by the deployment of support teams to develop proposals with country teams.
  • Occasionally support other technical writing tasks as required (Profile documents, presentations, pitches etc.)

Management

  • Coordinate and liaise with cross-functional teams at a management level. Participate in relevant GOAL meetings and discussions as requested and in coordination with the Director of Funding & Business Development to ensure the team is represented and responsive to the needs of the organisation at an operational and strategic level.
  • Take a key role in the coordination and implementation of the Funding and Business Development team strategy and Targeted Operating Model, in support of the Director of FBD.
  • Support the planning, management and monitoring of the funding and business development annual workplan and outcomes.
  • Coordinate closely with the Regional Director and Deputy Regional Directors for Africa relating to business development strategies and funding capture in the region.

Representation

  • Represent GOAL in meetings with donors and other strategic partners as required
  • Attend conferences and other strategic meetings in pursuit of collaboration and funding opportunities as required

Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience in the development sector, with a good track record in business development working with FCDO, ECHO, UN, EU, USAID, BPRM etc.
  • Excellent proposal writing skills and experience
  • Experience of working in consortia, including on proposal development, facilitation, programme management etc.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of institutional funding from multilateral and bilateral donors.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral), networking and influencing skills.
  • Proven track record devising and implementing resource mobilisation strategies.
  • Experience of and ability to represent GOAL with donors, local & national governments, other INGOs, commercial entities and other external institutions.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people, often on a remote basis.
  • Ability to manage a diverse workload, work under own initiative and demonstrate agility to changing priorities.
  • Proven financial, analytical and reporting skills.
  • Willingness to travel, sometimes at short notice, to GOAL’s operational locations.

Desirable

  • High level of written and spoken French language skills
  • Educated to Masters level.
