A year on from the events of December 8th, 2024, a new Syria is emerging. The optimism that swept across the country has not diminished; it has settled into a steady confidence, and the expectations of our people remain high.
More than 2.2 million Syrians – returning both from neighbouring countries and from displacement within our borders – have already made their way back home. However, millions more are not able to return due to destruction of homes, lack of jobs and basic services and the fear of continued instability within Syria. Strengthening essential services, particularly healthcare and education, is critical to enabling these returns and supporting sustainable growth. Equally important will be the creation of meaningful employment and the continued preservation of peace as Syria moves into this next phase.

Today, as new opportunities emerge and the prospect of genuine renewal becomes visible, international investment – especially from the European Union – can be transformative. With stable foundations and committed partners, Syria has the potential to rebuild, recover, and thrive.
As Ireland prepares to assume the Presidency of the EU next year, it is essential that Syria remains high on the agenda. Moments of real opportunity in post-conflict contexts are rare. This is one such moment – one that stands to benefit us all.
