Communities across Northern Colombia are recovering from the devastation of tropical storm Sara. Over 120,000 people across the country have been affected by strong winds and severe flooding. Farmers are among those counting the costs with crops destroyed and livestock tragically lost. Thankfully, GOAL teams are responding to the crisis.
Delivering emergency aid
With support from the Start Network, GOAL teams are responding, providing emergency aid to people in need. Hundreds of families cut off by road closures have now received food and water filters. GOALies have also distributed hundreds of hygiene kits in La Guajira to help prevent the spread of disease.
With flooding and road closures preventing parents from getting to work, GOAL’s support has provided a lifeline for families. Local farmers have also seen their stock decimated. Katherine Rosado, a teacher in the Ishakat community, explained, “Our animals have drowned. There is little possibility of work for parents. They are busy making barriers and removing sand from the river. With the growth of the river, it has been difficult for them to go out and work to support their families”.
Katherine continued, “GOAL came with a plan to help the community. With the blessing of God, they’ve brough aid to us parents.” Maire Elena Riveira, from the Poromana community, was grateful for the timely intervention, “We thank you for helping our community. It’s been very beneficial for my family.”
Edward Espinayú, a local community leader was also relieved to receive the support, “I am grateful to Start Fund and GOAL. The hygiene kit and food that they gave us will be very useful to our Wayúu family. Thank you very much.”
Ready to Act
GOAL’s emergency response is part of ‘Ready to Act’ programme. With support from the Start Network, Ready to Act has provided support to over 10,000 people in need. In recent weeks, GOAL teams have delivered 438 hygiene kits, 450 food kits and 161 water purification filters to communities in La Guajira (Colombia). These efforts have been supported by partner organisations such as Cadena Colombia, World Vision, Fundación Plan and Help Age.
