Clean Water, Healthier Futures: GOAL Sierra Leone Hands Over 109 Water Points to Rural Communities

Communities in Moyamba and Kenema Districts have taken a major step toward safer, healthier living with the completion of a GOAL Sierra Leone WASH initiative, funded by charity: water. Over the past year, 109 new water points and 10 sanitation facilities were constructed or rehabilitated, bringing clean water to households, schools, and health centres. The addition of solar-powered systems now ensures a steady, sustainable water supply in areas long affected by unsafe sources.

Across Sierra Leone, many rural communities continue to face challenges accessing safe water due to environmental degradation, limited infrastructure, and the impact of mining activities.

Through its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program, GOAL Sierra Leone works to improve community health, reduce waterborne diseases, and strengthen local capacity to manage and sustain water systems.

The recently completed year-long project in Moyamba and Kenema Districts exemplifies GOAL’s commitment to lasting, community-centred solutions supported by strong international and local partnerships.

Limited Access to Safe Water

For many families in Moyamba and Kenema, finding clean water has long been a daily struggle.

Communities have relied on contaminated surface water, exposing children and adults to preventable diseases.

During the water point handover event, Paramount Chief Fayia Sundifu Brima Sovula of Kamajei Chiefdom remarked, “This is not just infrastructure; it’s a lifeline.”

He explained how years of environmental damage made reliable water access nearly impossible for many villages in his chiefdom.

A Year of Collaboration and Innovation

From September 2024 to September 2025, GOAL Sierra Leone, with funding from Charity: Water, implemented a comprehensive WASH initiative to expand clean water access and improve sanitation in underserved rural areas.

The project delivered 109 new water points, 27 in Moyamba and 82 in Kenema, and constructed or rehabilitated 10 toilet blocks across four Peripheral Healthcare Units and three schools.

A key innovation was the installation of solar-powered reticulation systems, allowing clean water to be pumped directly to households, schools, and health facilities.

This sustainable approach reduces the burden on women and children, who often travel long distances to collect water.

Healthier Communities, Sustainable Futures

During the handover ceremony, GOAL Sierra Leone’s Acting Country Director, Getu Woyessa Debella, highlighted the project’s far-reaching benefits: “This initiative will significantly reduce waterborne diseases and improve community health and quality of life.”

Local authorities in Moyamba and Kenema District Councils formally received the infrastructure and pledged to oversee its long-term maintenance and community management.

For residents like Fatu Manasary, the impact is already clear: “We’ve been drinking contaminated water for years. Now, our children can drink clean water and stay healthy.”
