Monica Bol Kiir, a 25-year-old mother in Labior village, South Sudan, defied traditional beliefs and immense challenges to ensure her daughter, Akut Kuol Awol, received critical immunizations. Despite living 23 kilometres from the nearest health centre and facing frequent vaccine shortages, Monica stayed determined. She learned about vaccines, tracked schedules meticulously, and inspired others by addressing vaccine hesitancy in her community. Her perseverance now serves as a beacon of hope, helping her village embrace better health practices.
Labior village, like many areas affected by displacement and limited healthcare access, has struggled to maintain routine immunization schedules. Cultural hesitancy and logistical barriers often prevent parents from vaccinating their children, leaving them vulnerable to preventable diseases.
A Determined Mother
Monica grew up surrounded by traditional beliefs and limited healthcare options. Her daughter, Akut, missed her early vaccinations due to displacement and poor access to services. When identified by boma health workers as a zero-dose child, Monica resolved to change that. She endured long, arduous trips to the health centre, often walking alone with her daughter through challenging conditions.
Challenges and Triumphs
Frequent vaccine shortages and cultural hesitancy created significant challenges. Monica also faced scepticism from neighbours who questioned her persistence, saying, “We didn’t get all these vaccines, and we turned out fine.” She responded with patience and confidence, sharing what she had learned to help address their doubts.
Monica’s journey was supported by community health workers trained through programs funded by GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, and implemented by GOAL in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee (IRC). These health workers bridged the gap between health facilities and remote communities like Labior, conducting home visits, delivering vaccines, and ensuring families knew how to make informed decisions.
With the support of EPI vaccinators and these collaborative efforts, Akut completed her immunizations and is now protected against preventable diseases such as polio and measles.
A Community Leader Emerges
Inspired by her journey, Monica began working with boma health workers to raise vaccine awareness. By organizing village meetings and addressing doubts, she helped reduce vaccine hesitancy in her community. Her efforts are paving the way for improved health outcomes in Labior village.
