Access to clean water transforming lives in Uganda

Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake, and for thousands of families in Uganda’s Namayingo District a vital source of water. It’s a beautiful lake. But heavily polluted and underneath the surface hides many dangers for local communities.

Families are drinking water which has been polluted by both human and industrial waste. And they are putting their lives at risk to get it. Many women and children have been attacked by snakes and crocodiles just trying to collect water from the lake.

Thankfully, with support from charity: water, GOAL teams are working hard to provide safe drinking water to the community. And less and less families are forced to collect contaminated water from the lake every day.

Evelyn and Steven’s Story

Evelyn and Steven, proud parents of 5 adorable children, used to spend around 25% of their monthly income on healthcare. Contaminated drinking water from the lake forced the couple to regularly visit the local health clinic and pay for medicine to treat stomach problems such as diarrhoea.

Today the family have access to a borehole well just minutes from their home where they can collect as much clean water as they need. Whenever they need it. They no longer need to visit the medical centre regularly or pay for medicine to treat water borne diseases. And the money that they are saving is for all 5 of their children to go to school.

“Even though we were getting treatment we would fall sick again at home. But when we got the water from GOAL, we got relief. We now have hygiene at home. Now we have what we need at home and the water is good. The situation we had has improved and life is good,” Evelyn says.

Making a difference

GOAL’s Daniel Luba works in the community improving access to safe water, “It is really so nice to see that you are making a difference in someone’s life. You are transforming lives. People are getting better. People are enjoying their lives.”

Water shouldn’t be work, it shouldn’t make you sick, it shouldn’t cost a fourth of your income and it should never put your life at risk.

Please give what you can today to help families like Evelyn’s access safe drinking water.
