The Power of Water
In Sierra Leone, mothers like Mamie faced the daily struggle of collecting water from a contaminated swamp. Risking serious illnesses like cholera and diarrhoea, but she had no choice as it was the only water source she could access on foot.
Thomas Jones, Regional WASH Programme Manager for GOAL Sierra Leone, visited Mamie's village and saw the community's urgent need for clean water.
“In Sierra Leone, there is a drastic difference between a community that has clean water and a community that does not,” Thomas explains.
“Before, people spent precious time and money on medicine and clinic visits. Then, clean water comes. Over the following days and weeks, health improves. Parents worry less. Kids can study more. Everyone is energised and happy.”
“I ask you, next time you take a drink of water, think of Mamie and her family," Thomas says. "Because today, thanks to you, they are drinking clean water."
