In February 2012, Fadel and his family fled their home in central Syria to escape constant shelling and gunfire. They settled in a cave in the north of the country, the only shelter they could find.
To provide for his family (there are 11 children, aged between nine months and 18 years) Fadel sells firewood and keeps some goats and poultry. With winter approaching, he was very worried about the effect the cold, damp cave might have on the health of his younger children.
He was directed to a GOAL distribution point, where he received non-food items (NFIs) such as blankets, cooking utensils, warm clothes, and toiletries.
“Praise God, who has saved us through GOAL from the humiliation of begging. GOAL gave us winter supplies at exactly the right time,” said Fadel’s tearful wife.
"No one knows what would have become of us without GOAL’s assistance,” said Fadel, looking into the darkness of the cave where the family lives. “We cannot thank these people enough."
During 2014, over 270,000 people received GOAL NFI kits, or vouchers with which to buy items of their choice.
